Beauty FAQ

Skincare

What skincare products do I really need?

You don’t need a 12-step routine.

For most women, the foundation of a good routine is:

Cleanse → Exfoliate → Moisturize → Protect

In the morning, that means a gentle cleanser, products targeted to your specific concerns, moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF.

At night, cleanse, use your targeted treatments, and moisturize.

The key isn’t having more products. It’s using the right products consistently for what your skin needs now.

Why doesn’t my makeup look as good as it used to?

Your skin changes. That’s normal.

As we get older, changes in hydration, texture, elasticity, and pigmentation can affect how makeup sits on the skin. The solution usually isn’t piling on more makeup. It’s adjusting your skincare and application techniques.

Think better skin prep, lighter layers, strategic coverage, and products that work with your skin instead of fighting it.

Should I moisturize before applying makeup?

Absolutely.

Well-hydrated skin gives makeup a smoother canvas and can help prevent foundation from looking dry, flaky, or cakey.

Give your moisturizer a little time to absorb before moving on to primer or foundation.

Do I really need sunscreen if my foundation has SPF?

Yes.

Think of SPF in your makeup as a bonus, not your entire sun-protection strategy. A dedicated broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is a smart part of your morning routine.

And don’t forget your neck and chest!

When should I use a serum?

Generally, apply your products from thinnest to thickest, after cleansing and before moisturizer.

But the bigger question is: What are you trying to accomplish?

Hydration? Brightness? Fine lines? Uneven tone?

Your serum should have a purpose rather than simply being another pretty bottle on your counter.

Do I need different skincare as I get older?

You may need to adjust your skincare as your skin changes.

What worked beautifully in your 20s may not be what your skin wants in your 40s, 50s, or beyond.

That doesn’t mean you need to chase every new “anti-aging” product. It means paying attention to hydration, texture, sensitivity, sun protection, and the specific concerns your skin is showing you now.

How can I get my skin ready for makeup?

Start with hydration.

Clean skin, exfoliating, moisturizer, and appropriate eye care can make a huge difference in how makeup looks.

If you’re preparing for a special event, don’t wait until the morning of your appointment to experiment with a brand-new skincare product.

Your skin will appreciate consistency more than surprises.

Makeup Application

What order should I apply my makeup?

There are always exceptions, but here’s a great basic order:

Skincare → Primer → Foundation → Concealer → Powder where needed → Brows → Eyes → Blush/Bronzer → Highlighter → Lips → Setting spray

The goal isn’t to follow a rigid rulebook. It’s to create a routine that makes sense for your face, your products, and the look you’re creating.

Why does my foundation look cakey?

Usually, it’s not because you need more foundation.

Cakey makeup can happen when:

  • Your skin is dehydrated
  • You aren’t using a primer
  • You’re using too much product
  • You’re layering products that don’t work well together
  • You’re applying too much powder
  • Your foundation isn’t the right formula for your skin
  • You haven’t exfoliated in a while

Try applying less product in thinner layers and concentrating coverage only where you actually need it.

Should foundation cover my entire face?

Not necessarily.

Foundation should help even out your complexion, not necessarily erase every bit of natural skin.

I love a polished, natural-looking complexion where your skin still looks like skin.

How do I keep concealer from settling into my under-eye lines?

Start with hydration and use less concealing product than you think you need.

Apply concealer strategically rather than creating a thick layer underneath the entire eye.

Then set only where necessary with a small amount of powder. Having lines is not a makeup failure. It’s having a face.

How do I make my eyes look bigger?

You don’t necessarily need dramatic eyeliner.

A few simple techniques can make a big difference:

  • Keep the darkest color close to the lash line
  • Add definition to the outer corner
  • Use a lighter shade strategically
  • Curl your lashes
  • Apply mascara from root to tip
  • Define your brows

Your eye shape matters, too. There isn’t one “correct” way to apply eye makeup.

Should I wear eyeshadow if I have mature eyelids?

Absolutely.

The key is choosing the right colors, textures, and placement for your eyes.

You don’t have to stop wearing eyeshadow because your skin has changed. You may simply need to change how you apply it.

How do I make my makeup look natural but still polished?

My favorite approach is: Enhance, don’t hide.

Even out your complexion, define your eyes and brows, add color to your cheeks, and give your lips some life.

You don’t need a full-glam face every day to look pulled together.

Sometimes five intentional minutes is all you need.

How do I make my makeup last all day?

Long-lasting makeup starts before the makeup.

Good skincare prep, the right formulas, strategic powder, and a setting product can all help.

But there’s another secret: Don’t over-apply. Too much product can actually make makeup break down faster and settle into lines.

Color & Makeup

How do I know which makeup colors look best on me?

This is where color analysis can be a game changer.

Your skin undertone, hair, eyes, and overall coloring can all influence which shades make you look vibrant versus washed out.

That’s why I love helping women discover their Seasonal Color Palette.

Once you know your colors, choosing lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, clothing, and jewelry becomes so much easier.

Do I really need to know my seasonal color palette?

Need? No.

Can it make getting dressed and choosing makeup much easier? Absolutely.

Knowing your best colors gives you a shortcut. Instead of wondering whether that lipstick, shirt, necklace, or eyeshadow is “you,” you have a starting point based on your natural coloring.

What if I love a color that’s not in my palette?

Wear it!

Color analysis is a tool, not a set of fashion police rules.

If you love a color, we can look at ways to wear it that work beautifully with your overall coloring.

Beauty should make your life easier and more fun, not give you another list of rules to follow.

How do I choose the right lipstick?

Start with your coloring and then consider the look you’re creating.

Your best lipstick may change depending on whether you’re going for:

  • Everyday natural
  • Polished professional
  • Date night
  • Special occasion
  • Bold statement

And don’t forget that lipstick is one of the easiest ways to instantly change the energy of an outfit.

Jewelry & Accessorizing

How do I know what jewelry to wear with an outfit?

Start by asking three questions:

  • What’s the neckline?
  • What’s the color?
  • What’s the overall feeling of the outfit?

A simple neckline may be the perfect opportunity for a statement necklace.

A busy neckline may look better with earrings and bracelets.

And sometimes the best accessory is simply a great pair of statement earrings and nothing else.

Should I wear gold or silver?

You can wear either!

Your natural coloring can help determine which metal tends to make you glow, but personal style matters too.

Your wardrobe can also influence the answer.

If you’re curious, try comparing gold and silver near your face in natural light. Pay attention to which one makes your skin look brighter and more vibrant.

Can I mix gold and silver jewelry?

Yes!

Mixing metals can actually make your jewelry look more modern and intentional.

The trick is to make the combination look deliberate rather than accidental.

Try repeating the mixed-metal combination in more than one place so the look feels connected.

How much jewelry is too much?

There is no magic number.

Instead, think about balance.

If you’re wearing a dramatic statement necklace, you may want simpler earrings.

If your earrings are the star, let them have their moment.

And if you’re wearing a simple outfit, jewelry can be the thing that makes the whole look come alive.

How do I accessorize a basic outfit?

This is one of my favorite transformations.

Start with your basic outfit and add:

Earrings → Necklace → Bracelet → Ring → Color

You don’t necessarily need all five.

Even adding the right pair of earrings and a coordinating necklace can take an outfit from “I got dressed” to “I put this together on purpose.”

How do I know which necklace works with my neckline?

Think of your necklace as an extension of the neckline.

  • V-neck: Try a pendant or necklace that follows the V.
  • Crew neck: Shorter statement necklaces or longer necklaces can work beautifully.
  • Scoop neck: Layered or curved necklaces can complement the shape.
  • Button-down: Try a shorter necklace inside the collar or a longer pendant.
  • High neckline: Often a statement earring is more effective than a necklace.

And remember: rules are helpful starting points, not laws.
